High Five Monday – August

by thelifestylelady August 9, 2015

Howdy Y’all!

How was your weekend? Mine was quiet and relaxed, I got some “me” time courtesy of Mr L (hope it might result in my first Vlog but lets not get carried away…)  More excitingly, a dear friend of mine was celebrating the safe arrival of her beautiful baby whom I had the great pleasure to meet. It’s amazing that Little L used to be that small, where does the time go? (that is a rhetorical question, since this is not a Stem blog!) So this weeks high five is all about August and things that make it great. If you live in a place that gets super hot as we do, August can begin to get you down. It can be quite limiting, especially with energetic toddlers, but behind all clouds is that silver lining so I wanted to celebrate that with August.

August

  1. The Weather, don’t scream at me for this, especially those of you who, like me, fantasize about rain. I am not a sun worshipper and never have been; don’t really have the complexion for it. This was never such a problem when I lived in the UK as it was such a rarity to see the sun (even in August.) The heat in Texas in August is no laughing matter: it gets road-melting hot! So that often means being outside a little less – unless of course you can use a pool. I am thankful because the weather has caused the L family to use the pool and enjoy more family time. We also spend time together in Little L’s play area, compensating for the fact we want to be outside at the park. It has also caused me to focus on tweaking areas of the house which needed sorting, which I would be more reluctant to do if the weather was more agreeable.
  2. Travel, August is one of the most popular months for travel. Whether it’s to get out of the heat, find more of it, or enjoy it in more pleasant circumstances, August is travel time. I love to travel, but I don’t love travel and I don’t know many who do, especially with a toddler. Travel to me is a form of education and I cannot get enough. It really is a treat to immerse and expose yourself to new cultures and experiences. With school vacations being in August this makes it prime time for holidaying/vacationing. Since Little L is not at school yet, we might shoot for a vacation in the next few months.
  3. Shopping, yay August is a fantastic month for shopping and sales, in particular large expensive purchases. If you are looking to book flights for Thanksgiving or Festive Season, it is widely alleged that you will receive the best prices in August. So come on BOOK. If you are looking for a new automotive (I’ll have an Aston Martin please Mr L), August is your month. The industry is preparing for the new season models so great deals on older models. Patio furniture and grills are a summer staple in any climate. You can get great deals on these items in August and still get plenty of use for the remaining season. Do not even get me started on storage and organizational sales.
  4. Back to school time. This is bittersweet but I am putting this one out there for my mama friends who have kiddies of school age. A combination of heat and a bored child means that the beginning of the school season can be a blessing. In the US the majority of kids head back in August and in Europe preparations for an early September start will be underway. We all need the normalcy of getting back to the routine. Children back at school means Little L and I will start back with our usual routine classes.
  5. Sport, Football is here again. Now this a ridiculous statement from me, sport not really a LL thing, but over the summer I have educated myself in five seasons of Friday Night Lights, so I am an expert! Sport is such a big deal in Texas I have decided one of my mini resolutions is to learn more about it. Many of my dear female friends love sport (baseball in particular) and I do not want to be left behind. So, much to Mr L’s delight, I am educating him in US football. After all “Clear Eyes, Full hearts, Can’t Lose.”

High Five August.

What do you like about August? Leave me a comment?

High Five Monday- Must Have Apps Iphone

by thelifestylelady August 4, 2015

Howdy Y’all,

This weeks high-five is a little later than normal but it’s still Monday in the US so that makes it 👍. Hope your weekend was good, it was fairly quiet in The Lifestyle Household, which meant I could tackle August Org (will blog update soon) and I have to confess took a little much-needed downtime. So this week’s high-five are apps that I can’t live without on my phone.

1. Cozi. Love love love this app, it has transformed the organization of my family life and I think it’s the best diary/organization app ever. I love the fact we have a family login and password.  The calendar function allows independent and shared calendars including the creation of family calendars. You can create and save shopping lists for recipes, groceries or any other shopping you can think of. One of the brilliant features is the to do list; you can create and add to each other’s throughout the day. This has been a super plus chez lifestyle. We can remind each other to do things without the nagging (so thank you Cozi for making happier relationships) and emails reminders to the selected audience so you never need forget anything again! It also has a journal function which I confess I am yet to acquaint myself with. Great to find an app which both Mr L and I enjoy using. It has a great interface and you can access your data from Cozi on any device! High Five Cozi.

2. What’s App. Now this app is a lifesaver for a family like mine; it literally makes the world smaller. When you live thousands of miles from family and friends the ability to text, send videos and images across the Internet for free is phenomenal. Especially for family who can’t see little L everyday this makes the distance seem closer. I honestly don’t think I would have settled as well here in the US if I didn’t have this wonderful app. High Five and thankyou What’s App.

3. Meetup. Now I am relatively new to this app, it came into my life about two years ago. When I moved to Texas I knew nobody, I was pregnant and friendless. It is not that easy to meet people, so I came across this app, I gave it a go and joined an amazing group called The Transplant Parents of Dallas and the rest as they say is history. I literally met 98% of my friend base through this app and it transformed my life. I also know a great friend of mine made wonderful friends through the app when she lived in NYC so if you’re not familiar with it, join – it’s fantastic. It has genuinely transformed my life and given me the best group of friends a gal could dream of. High five and thankyou Meetup.

4. Chrome. Love Google, love Chrome. Great and easy way to lookup information on the run. Use it all the time and it never lets me down, unlike certain other browsers. Class act. High five Chrome.

5. Video/ You Tube. Anyone with a child gets this, need I say more? Lifesaver. When Little L is on the verge of a meltdown or bored to tears, this app allows me those extra minutes I really need to get the task done. Just wish I had more storage to hold more material. Plus I can catch up on information from bloggers I follow on the rare occasions little L lets me use my own phone. High Five You Tube.

Now I am aware that no social media made it into the top five. Mainly because I use that on my iPad rather than iPhone. I have a list of items including Skype which I couldn’t live without but again I don’t tend to use on my phone.

Any apps I have to try? What apps can you not live without? Leave me a comment please.

Throw Back Thursday- Britsh Summer

by thelifestylelady July 24, 2015

This is the first year in my life where I have not been home for some of the British Summer. Until now I can’t say I had thought of that until I read this article in the UK paper The Daily Mail. I wanted to share my take on all things wonderful about British summer.

Socks and Sandals – sorry but when models can’t make socks and sandals look appealing or cool there is not a “cat in hells chance” of you or I managing it. It’s an absolute turn off, as the article suggests in Britain it is famous that dad’s wear them. Pleased to say that Daddy L never has done and Mr L wouldn’t dare 😜 This is one where my American friends win because they wear they’re socks with sneaks/trainers/tennis shoes and it looks much better. This is not part of a UK summer I miss.

Strawberries and Cream. So British and so yum. Plus it’s fruit so it healthy- right? Reminds me so much of the summer, especially Wimbledon tennis, which Mr L and I used to live a stones throw from. Gosh I can hear that ponk and grunt in my head. Unless you have been living under a rock I imagine you have tried this simple delight. Right I know what’s on my grocery list today. 🍓🍓🍓

Fish and Chips. Oh goodness me, every English person can tell you where they have had fantastic fish and chips. As the article suggests it’s not simply the flavor but the setting which all adds to the flavor. I can tell you the best fish and chips I have had to date were with Mr L in St Mawes, Cornwall. Granted it wasn’t the summer but November, sitting in my car overlooking the stormy sea, goodness me the thought is bringing back happy memories. Salt and vinegar chips, cod and mushy peas. Now my American friends who have been to the UK have been decidedly underwhelmed by fish and chips and I have a theory. Much like all cuisine often the most genuine and tasty is not found in touristy areas, so next time ask a Brit where you can get good fish and chips or pie ‘n’ mash. Goodness I am homesick 😢

Punch and Judy. I can’t think whether I have ever seen one of these in the US (do they?) This is again another British summer institution, if you break-it down the whole thing is abhorrent, basically ugly squeaking puppets where Punch bashes the hell out of Judy.i do think Punch gets his punishment am I right? It’s awful on so many levels, ( I expect that the stories may have moved on from what I remember.) I will confess I would probably stop if I saw it because again it’s part of that traditional seaside summer. The arcades I could take or leave, noisy and indoor and who wants that when it’s actually sunny in Britain.

Tinkly Music and Mr Whippy. Who doesn’t love an ice cream van? The music everything about them takes me back to childhood. Now I like a luxury ice cream vans, and that is defined by whether they carry ice cream Mars. Simple as. Now Mr Whippy was a big deal in my home, a 99er that’s 99 pence not pounds, Britain is expensive but not that bad. On a hot summer holiday day my family would be known to drive around on the hunt for a Mr Whippy van, because Mummy L had to have Mr Whippy. Brother L and I would sit in the back of our steamy (dog stinking) estate nose pressed to the windows searching for the correct van. Passing little kiddies whose mummy and daddies where licking the edges of the come before it dropped everywhere. While we drove from town to town looking for Mr Whippy. It’s a wonder that Bro L and I have grown to such poorly adjusted humans! An Oyster I have not had but will have to try next trip. 🍦🍦🍦

Office air conditioning and the summer cold. Yes to my US friends air conditioning is a fairly rare commodity in the UK. Corporate offices and other newer buildings have it and that is why we Brits are such a productive workforce during the summer. We want to be in the office. As the air is on, we strip off to barely nothing and therefore we suffer with the common cold. Insane and totally British. If you have not stood on a sweaty tube in London in August you have not lived, it’s a must ☀️

Denim shorts and Hunter Wellies. I don’t have much to say concerning denim shorts, not really my thing, think they should remain in the 80’s along with dungarees. Hunters on the other hand are now quite the fashion item, I have owned a pair most of my life being a country gal. I remember Hunters when you could only get them in black, green or navy. I am proud to say I own a pink and red pair now! They are comfortable and practical and should be covered in mud. I’m not sure I will ever get used to seeing people in them on a rainy day in a city – but it is sensible. Since festivals unless literary are not my thang, I am not so familiar with this summer concept.

Bangers and Buns. Sorry UK but nobody grills and BBQs like the US plain and simple.

Navy, red and white. Colors of the flag and my fav color combo. Devine.

Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood. Yes The Great British Bakeoff will be back, fab show. If you don’t own a Marry Berry cookbook you should. She is an institution. For my American friends you might know Paul for other reasons. (Cough.)

Pimms and Cider. Yes please. For my US friends who have not had a jug of Pimms let me know and I will sort it out. Lovely long summer afternoon drinkie. Gosh Pimms I miss you.

Parks and men with no tops. Should be banned. It’s never the men you want topless so I am going to petition for a new law, to stop this cruelty.

Euro and pop. Little behind of music scene these days, although who doesn’t like a bit to bop to cheesy pop?

Pub and Garden. Homesick, the pub is a British institution and the ability to sit in a garden in the summer for more than 90 seconds is wonderful. So British and so fun.

Sunshine and Rain. The weather is so terribly British, it dominates much conversation. It was Jane Austen who wrote “keep your comments to the weather or the state of the road.” This rings true still. Rain is part of us and I feel like I have forgotten what it’s like.

So I will spend the next few days dreaming of home! Have you been? Did you like?

Im off to book flights

The King and I – Getting to know you

by thelifestylelady July 23, 2015

It was the classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical The King and I (am I showing my age?) That had the famous song “Getting To Know You.” This song has provided some inspiration for today’s blog, I was thinking it would be good if my blog readers had more information about me the Lifestyle Lady. I have answered a question for every year for my life So lets dig in..

1. Do you have kids? Yes! I’m lucky to be a Mummy L to my wonderful almost 21 month year old daughter Rose.

2. Whats you middle name? Victoria, not that interesting and not that common. Name of a Queen, so I am keeping good company!
3. When did you cry last? This morning, I was trying to find a rendition of “Getting to know you,” my daughter came sat on my lap and we watched several of the key songs in all the old musicals, Hello Dolly, My Fair Lady, King and I and many more. It reminded me of what I used to do with my Grandpa, it was very nostalgic and bitter-sweet. I was also so proud that Little L looks like she may share my passion for the classics Yay!
4. If you were another person, would you be a friend of yourself? Hell yeah. I hope I’m a good friend.
5. Do you use sarcasm a lot? It’s my middle name.
6. Will you ever bungee-jump? Out of choice – No. But I don’t like saying no and love a challenge so this might be a bucket list addition.

7. How tall are you? 5ft10 inches.
8. Do you believe in happy endings? Yes you have to work at it, but generally yes.
9. Favorite smells? Freshly laid tarmac, Creosote and anything Jo Malone.
10. Summer or winter? Winter, it has Christmas and summer in Texas is crazy 🔥

11. Guilty TV pleasure? Real Housewives every time.
12. Secret Crush? Idris Elba.
13. Do you have any special talents? Not sure I can answer that one, bragging is not my thing.

14. Dinner party classic? I am known for my puddings.

15. Look like anyone famous? Some people used to say I look a little like Kate Winslet, but only in a dark room with your eyes shut. (Sorry Kate.) Or a blonde Kirsty Allsopp (Americans wont know her.)

16. Desert Island Essential – Bug spray, they love me.

17. What are your hobbies? Everything lifestyle related, minus cleaning. I love to read, swim, write and being with my family.
18. Do you have any pets? Not currently but want a dog in the future. (please Mr L.)
19. Favorite book? Wuthering Heights – masterpiece.
20. Do you have any siblings? Yup Bro L (He is older, I am writing this to check he reads my blog!)
21. Describe yourself in five words? Hate these type of questions always sound an idiot. Capable, thoughtful, organized, funny and easy-going.

22. Your biggest character flaws? Critical, I can be a little critical of myself and others, I have high standards and sometimes have to learn to let things go. Sensitive, I can take things personally when I shouldn’t, this is getting better since becoming a mummy, have less time to worry.

23. What are you most proud of? Rose my daughter, enough said, she is perfect to me. Being elected at 23years old.

24. What do you dislike in others? Arrogance and rudeness so classless and unnecessary.

25. If you were a cartoon character, which one would you be? Daniel Tiger, because then I might get some of Little L’s undivided attention. She LOVES him.

26. What is one color that you could definitely live without? Orange blah.

27. What do you dream about most often? Failing exams.

28. What are 5 things you want more of right now? Time – never enough. Patience – I have a toddler. Tolerance and Consideration – we would live in a different world if everyone had a little more of these. Power – might be able to ensure all children get an education. Will-power – might not have had that extra slice of pizza (whoops.)
29. What are 5 things you want to do before you die? See my daughter happy and settled. Run a marathon. World cruise. Work for a charity. Learn to play the cello.
30. What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever done? Having a baby whilst moving to a new State with no friends or family.

31.If you could have any job, what would it be and why? Perhaps CEO Save the Children or the UN. I would like to help every child across the world get an education – so important.

32. Favorite Quote? “Life is not a dress rehearsal. ” So true so live everyday.

My LifeJust wanted to say thanks to some of the blogs where I go the inspiration from and some of the questions. Anything else you would like to know about me???? Shoot me so questions?

Hope this offers you some insight into me!

Netflix Negotiations

by thelifestylelady July 21, 2015

Being parents to Little L, and therefore not being able to get out as easily as we did before and finding ourselves more tired at the end of the day after running around after a toddler, relaxation is often sought by collapsing in a heap on the sofa. Finding  a TV series that we can both enjoy can often be process of negotiation, dear Mr L likes to watch a series in full rather than waiting for the weekly offering so we find ourselves drawn to Amazon Prime or Netflix. So rather than promote some of the fabulous US shows that we have enjoyed, I wanted to mention some of the fantastic British drama series available on Netflix that you might wish to give a perusal. I would imagine the vast majority of these dramas are available on Netflix in other countries.

Fleming The Man What Would Be Bond– this is a mini drama about the life of Ian Fleming (the writer of James Bond.) You see how his life formed the basis and creation of James Bond. Interesting story, period setting and fun viewing. A couple win win, after all what man doesn’t want to be Bond? For the ladies plenty to admire in the male cast 🙂 ( FYI It is a little steamy at times.)

Luther- A gritty police drama based in London, fantastic cast including Ruth Wilson (The Affair fame) and Idris Elba. (Ladies need I say more???)

Sherlock- This I know has been shown on PBS and has a worldwide cult following, it has catapulted Benedict Cumberbatch to universal notoriety. This modern-day take on the Arthur Conan Doyle books is exquisite. It makes you think, well acted and is very clever. If you have not watched this, it’s a must. Very much looking forward to the next series.

The Fall- This fabulous drama is based in Ireland and follows the police trying to catch a serial killer. The serial killer is not as you imagine and the relationship between him Jamie Dornan (Fifty Shades fame) and classy (Gillian Anderson) keeps you gripped. It is scary at times not necessarily because of explicit content. This was one of the best things I had seen in a while, so unless your petrified, keep with it. This is a win win because Jamie Dornan plays serial killer so well and Gillian Anderson makes me want to wear silk blouses more often :0)

Broadchurch –  The original British drama that the US mirrored with Gracepoint. If you have watched Gracepoint you may want to give this a miss as the stories are identical. If you have watched neither the lead police officer male is played by Brit actor David Tennant in both and I found him much easier to understand in Broadchurch. Good story, great cast, lovely Dorset scenery and a twisted conclusion. A good watch.

The Honourable Woman – A political spy drama, starring the elegant Maggie Gyllenhaal (who won a Golden Globe for the performance.) Its basic synopsis is Anglo-Israeli Gyllenhaal who has dedicated her life to Middle East peace is prevented from continuing her life’s work in connecting the West Bank with optical fibre cables. There are kidnaps and secrets galore. It is a thought-provoking, brain using and politically sensitive drama, which deserves it accolades. I feel I want to watch again to absorb more of the detail. First class and worth a watch.

House of Cards – Those of you who have been addicted to the Netflix series and the very eery Kevin Spacey should give the original drama a view. Yes the original is based on the British Houses of Parliament and although its looking a little dated, the conniving characters and clever lines are much the same, as Mr L said as we were watching “You might very well think that, I couldn’t possibly comment.” Worth a flit.

Happy Valley– This gritty police drama is not as the title suggests happy. It follows a police officer coming to terms with the suicide of her daughter and facing the man she believes responsible for driving her daughter to her death. This is a very British drama but one I enjoyed.

These are a small selection, mostly of my favourite thrillers and dramas. I hope to give other genre suggestions at a later date. What do you love to watch? Any suggestions for us? We are currently finishing Boss, which is good. Would love to hear from you? If you watch these let me know what you think?

About Moi!

by thelifestylelady July 16, 2015

2015-05-23 19.19.48-2

Howdy & How do you do?

Yes that’s me Kate, a British 30 something lady living in the USA and Texas to be precise. I’m a mummy (yes my spelling will remain loyal) a wife, a daughter, a daughter in law, a sister, a sister in law, an aunt, a friend and God knows what else I have forgotten. So like most of us know with lots of hats I never quite get enough time for ME! (What’s that?!) When I do have that spare second between clearing up the latest disaster my darling toddler has left me and trying to look after my husband and by look after I mean ensuring he still wants to live in the same home as I, I love everything lifestyle. Fashion, home decor, cooking, cleaning (well ideas to make it disappear) parenting etc. Practically everything in life. So if you like a dry sense of humour, are reading this instead of doing the pile of ironing or cleaning something that has needed to be done for a while, then you might want to read this blog.

I want it to be fun, interactive and make some new friends along the way.

So buckle up!

Yesterday we celebrated 10 years of marriage, no mean feat by today’s statistics. It was not the celebration or in the place where we had planned, but if Covid has taught me anything it’s that we are not in charge and can not control everything . It is not the bells and whistles that make the most sacred of memories. I am not one for big declarations of affection (sorry y’all,) I share simply this, I got lucky, I married a man I looked up too and respect. He doesn’t need to tell you what a good egg he is because he demonstrates it in his everyday unassuming way. He is a gentleman in all ways. Our decade has not been all plain sailing, we have moved more than some people vote, we have laughed more than we have cried and there has been reason for both. We had our beautiful daughter and although the path was not as easy or as we imagined we are a family. Life rarely goes the way you plan, case in point currently, but it’s a hell of a lot easier with a partner who is always you greatest ambassador and champion. Love like life is a journey and I am glad to do it with you. Happy Anniversary Mr L! #thelifestylelady #marriage #love #anniversary
