2016

by thelifestylelady January 26, 2016

Howdy Y’all,

Firstly Happy New Year. I am late to the game but I hope you had a fabulous holiday season with those who are special to you and celebrated the arrival of 2016 in style. I travelled home which was wonderful and I hope to cover some of this in the coming weeks. I appreciate I have taken a prolonged break from TLL and I could come up with infinite excuses as to why I have been away but that would be poor form. Please rest assured that I have taken some of the break to consider what direction I wish to take the blog. One of the things that has motivated me to date is the dialogue I have with you the reader. I love getting emails and comments and the feedback I have received has helped me plan some great posts for the future. So saddle up and enjoy the journey.

Ta ta for now,

TLLX

Happy Thanksgiving

by thelifestylelady November 26, 2015

Howdy Y’all,

Happy Thanksgiving. I can honestly say I am honored to write these words today, it is slowly becoming a favorite holiday of mine. As a non-American I feel privledged to experience and share in this special day. I am equally blessed that with the birth of my dear American Little L it is a tradition which will continue in the Lifestyle household for our lifetime. There is something so special about friends, family and loved ones coming together in a celebration of thanks. Gathering together and breaking bread (and far more than that as evidenced by my clothing change from jeans to leggings for the elasticated waist 😳 -whose with me?) There is no elaborate gifts giving involved or early morning wake ups from children excited by Santa, it’s simply enjoying who you’re with, watching parades and football.
Mr L and I have been immensely lucky in the five years we have lived in the US, we have never spent a thanksgiving holiday alone.  I think this says a great deal about US people and their hospitality. We have been fortunate to have had a variety of experience with friends and their families but what is most apparent is how thanksgiving gives you the opportunity to be “in the moment” with each other. I have enjoyed the table conversations which have stemmed from what we are thankful for. Today for example I was touched to hear my dear friends young son express that he is thankful for his lovely family as well as so much more.
I am thankful for a great deal. Those of you who are familiar with my blog will know I am not the “gushy” type, in fact I find public displays and declarations of affection uncomfortable. Today however is about giving thanks so I will give it a stab. I am thankful for Mr L he is everything to me. I am thankful I took the job 😉.  Little L is my life I can’t remember life before her, mainly because I am not the same person as I was before and she has enriched my life immeasurably. She is and will be my greatest achievement. I didn’t know the heart was capable of such love till I had her. I am thankful for my family who are so far away, distance can be difficult but I am thankful for Skype and for their continued love and support. For my friends who make our lives richer, when you live a distance from family you create a family through friends. I can honestly tell you I am blessed in this department. Today in particular to my dear friend K and her family who have opened their home and offered their table at Thanksgiving- thank you.

Finally to you the reader of this, I am grateful to you that you take the time out of your busy life to read my offering, to follow and to comment. This new blogging adventure has been a great addition to my life and I am thankful to the people who know me and support my blogging ambitions (Mr L.)

So on the evening of thanksgiving I wish you and your family great blessings. I am going to lie down and rest off this food coma I find myself in and wait for Mrs Claus (that is another blog post entirely.)

Ta Ta for now,

Howdy Y’all,

How are you? I hate acronyms but this title seemed appropriate. It is an apology for my tardy blog posts of late. As many of you get to know me, you will realize I wear lots of hats and none more important than that of mummy, wife, sister and friend. Recently these roles of which I have the privledge of holding have demanded more of my time and therefore my blogging has not been as easy. I am not perfect, far from it, I do sometimes struggle with balance but I always want to provide you with quality and interesting posts and don’t want to produce items which I am not happy with. This may sometimes result in a delay in posting. I am back at my virtual desk and am hoping to share some interesting posts in the next few weeks. So sorry I have been missing in action, please stick with me and keep getting in touch. I love to hear from you.

High Five Monday – Podcast Lovin

by thelifestylelady October 12, 2015

Howdy Y’all,

How are you? Happy Monday!! I hope you are all enjoyed the weekend. Mine was quiet which was lovely especially since we have been busier recently and with the impending holiday and birthday season nearly upon us quiet family time will be decreasing. It is good some times to stop and take stock, just take a deep breath and really look around you, I am always wanting to do this more. I think I mentioned before that one of the things I miss most about my life pre-motherhood other than the obvious (being time) is concentration. I am quite sure there is some scientific reason why I struggle to even concentrate on reading a menu. You will know by now that I love to read, a past time which has been a casualty of motherhood mainly because of the concentration. I thought that a listening book might be the solution especially when Little L and I are doing a journey, but low and behold 20 minutes in I have no clue what is going on. My solution is podcasts. I have always enjoyed podcasts, but even more now. The variety keeps me stimulated and interested and I find I am following, learning and laughing along the way. Win win. So  I thought today I would share with you some of my classics and some of my new discoveries

Call Your Girlfriend. This is a celebration of friendship in particular female friendship. Ann Friedman (writer) and Aminatou So (Google’s head of Politics and Social Marketing) discuss everything about society. It is very funny and interesting. I always learn and smile throughout from two very impressive ladies.

The Great Courses. If you are not familiar with this website then you are missing out. I am always trying to learn more about this wonderful place in which we live and this website and podcast assist in my inquisitive nature. Each podcast is led by another engaging professor from some of the worlds best universities. It has a vast repertoire and is bound to cover a topic you want to discover more about. I always come away more informed and better educated on world affairs.

Stuff You Missed In History Class. If your history education was anything like mine you know a great deal about a small moment in history. I took history all the way until college, but most of my history studies had been focused on the twentieth century. That left many gaps in my knowledge. This is quite American centric and is part of the how stuff works series. I enjoy discovering and learning about people and places in history and this podcast is right up my street.

BBC Radio 4 Today Show & Woman’s Hour. Call me bias but I think the BBC is a world leader in broadcasting journalism and I believe that Radio 4 is its flagship. If I want to get a good grasp on current world affairs it is the podcast of The Today Show I turn to. We can all get busy and miss out on important issues and this podcast informs and educates. Similarly Woman’s Hour podcast keeps me informed on issues women related. There is no “burning bras” here it contains interesting discussion and debate for women. Couldn’t live  without either.

This American Life. This is a podcast of a public radio show from Chicago. It has won all broadcasting awards and covers a vast plethora of topics from society and culture. It is highly popular and rightly so.

So I realize that many of  my choices are education and current affair focused, but that is mainly what I am into. I also listen daily to podcasts of  LBC a British talk radio show, which I always find fascinating, listening to differing opinions. What podcasts do you love? Get in touch.

High Five Monday – Loving October

by thelifestylelady October 5, 2015

Howdy Y’all,

Happy Monday! How are you? Good weekend? Mine was really fab! Pampering, time with friends and family equates to a LL happy weekend. The cherry on the cake was arrival of a cooler front in Texas which brought with it temps of 70 and 80 which was wonderful. It was well-timed arrival as we welcomed October (can you believe that?) October to me is a wonderful month. Where I live it is finally cools enough to feel like Autumn, it also brings the change of colors and it is the quiet before the storm of November and December which are so busy! It’s all about harvest, and appreciating the land. I love to be outside enjoying the fresh air. Today on the blog I thought I would share what I love about October. What do you love about October? What have I missed? Get in touch.

  1. Sips. October brings such variety in the drinkie area, we start to transition back to warm coffee and travel mugs. (LLL my Starbucks gold travel mug) It also starts the pumpkin spiced coffees which I must admit are not my thang but all my friends love. My friend has written a great blog post on pumpkin coffee, check it out. For those of you who like an adult drinkie, October brings the world-famous Oktoberfest, and many other mini versions all across the world. I am quite sure every town and city will have something related. The beer and cider companies all celebrate by creating pumpkin spiced beverages, which are delicious.
  2. Slippers & Sweaters. Yes cozy time, the cashmere can come out, you want to remove your feet from boots and place them in warm slippers. You can wrap up in knit-wear and go out without sweating. YAY! Dont get me started about throws and blankets!!!
  3. Scary. Yes Halloween time. I mentioned in an earlier blog that I am not crazy about Halloween but I do enjoy the decoration and preparation of a holiday. I love that it is a start of a new tradition with Little L. We have been sorting her costume and reading all about the fun of it all.
  4. Sports. Yes you are to be amazed that this made the LL list. It is not really for me more for Mr L and my friends, but I am slowly getting more into American Footie and October is a good month because the season is well underway. For my UK friends the footie and rugby season are well underway as well. For TLL it means Mr L is happy to stay in and watch footie so I can go out and have a few gal nights (win win!)
  5. Senses. Yes the smell, sounds and sights of October are amongst my favs. The smell of Bed, Bath & Bodyworks candle Leaves captures October in a smell. I’m probably crazy but I also love to go outside and inhale the fresh (crisper) air of October it always smells good. Especially here, the sounds of October I enjoy, you can hear kids playing in the park or street, people blowing leaves, washing cars and chatting. All signs of life and people coming out of their sweaty hibernation. With sights other than the obvious beautiful color changes, October brings the new TV seasons, something to cuddle up to with a cozy blanket as the nights draw in. TGIT Yay!!

Enjoy Monday.

High Five- Her Majesty The Queen

by thelifestylelady September 14, 2015

Howdy Y’all,

Today’s high-five was a no brainer for me, I wanted to celebrate HM The Queen. For those of you who are unaware last week she became the longest reigning monarch in British history serving for over 63 years and 216 days. She has beaten the previous record set by HM Queen Victoria, interesting that they are both women :0) This event for my country is one of those once in a lifetime. To honor and celebrate her I wanted to share some interesting facts about her life!

God Save The Queen

The picture of elegance and beauty. Such a remarkable ambassador of royalty and femininity.

1 Queen Elizabeth II is Head of State in 16 Commonwealth countries including the British Isles and head of the Commonwealth which includes 53 countries. (Over a quarter of the world.) She does not use a passport and during her reign has visited over 129 countries.

Beautiful Lady

2 Queen Elizabeth II is the 40th monarch since William the Conqueror

3 Queen Elizabeth II is the patron of over 620 charities and organizations, she averages 425 engagements a year, which is amazing when you consider that she is 89 years of age.

4 Queen Elizabeth II and Duke of Edinburgh have been married for almost 68 years!!!! It is alleged when she first met him aged 13 she had already decided he would be her future husband. Her wedding dress was paid for with ration coupons. Their marriage has produced four children, eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. image

5. Queen Elizabeth II is woken every morning by a bagpipe player.

A Letter of Life Lessons and Learnings for Little L

by thelifestylelady September 2, 2015

Howdy Y’all,

I have a small secret to share, today is my birthday. God it is so much easier to write than to say, so I thought what could I blog about on my birthday? Birthdays can be nostalgic times and for me often make me take stock of where I am, what I have learned and where I want to be. Since becoming a mummy I have become more self-aware of life and time and how precious and fragile it is. Another little Lifestyle secret is that Mr L on our anniversary every year writes me a letter, this sacred tradition he has now established with Little L by writing to her every year on her birthday. Letter writing is such a dying form but such a work of art, it is so difficult to write especially in this day and age where the extent of the average vocabulary Is lol. I wanted to mark this occasion with a letter or sorts to Little L from her mummy. I have been wanting to do this since her birth (should anything happen to me) but I have been procrastinating. This letter which is more a list, is a reflection of my personality, lessons I have learned, some funny, some serious and some sad but all important. So here goes….

  1. Smile, it makes everything better and laughter lines are beautiful. They always make a face look kinder.
  2. Don’t glow the small stuff. It’s just that – small. (Glow rather than sweat, ladies glow 😜)
  3. Jump, your much braver, stronger and smarter than you think, but do so in some killer shoes.(Mama recommends Choo, Louboutinor Blahnik.)
  4. Trust, if someone betrays that, that’s their problem. Brush yourself off, put on a really good lipstick and face the day.
  5. Do things because you want to, not because you feel you should or because you want things back in return. You will be happier because of it.
  6. Frogs, you have to kiss a few to meet your prince/princess.  💋🐸💋 (I am totally fine with either.)
  7. Don’t use the word nice, it means nothing. Like is similar but not so bad.
  8. Dance, you can never dance enough. There is not enough dancing in the world. I can do a mean Shakira and Cayote Ugly after some liquor.💃
  9. It is super fine to be different. Don’t be a sheep unless the shepherd is cute.
  10. You don’t have to have life figured out half the fun is the discovery. I’m still trying,
  11. Treat others as you wish to be treated. The world would be very different if we all followed that one!!
  12. Love is like wine and men, it gets better with age! Trust mama on that one! Your grandma raised me on be an old mans sweetheart not a young mans slave – in my experience so true.
  13. It’s our differences which make us special. Celebrate that.
  14. Life is not a dress rehearsal, it’s the main event, live for yourself and enjoy every minute. Today stop, look around you take a minute to appreciate. We never do that enough. The world is a place of beauty.
  15. Accept yourself once you do you will be much happier. Cellulite can be sexy. Plus a real man wont care anyway.
  16. Moisturize twice a day, especially under your eyes and your neck (they show your age first.)
  17. Clean underwear daily is the law. Matching if possible.
  18. If your feeling insecure don’t take it out on others, such a female trait. Plus everyone feels insecure.
  19. People can do unjust and unkind things sometimes. Learn and move on.
  20. Sometimes I feel better after a good cry, Sex and the City and a pint of great ice cream.
  21. Bad days/weeks/events happen, if they didn’t how would we know about the good.
  22. Travel is the best education. Big old world out their, go see it. If you can do so traveling on a private jet all the better.
  23. A world where every child gets am education is a world your mama wants to live in, I hope you inherit this passion.
  24. Woulda, shoulda, coulda is for losers if you want something go out and get it. For God sake don’t moan about it.
  25. Drink water and get plenty of sleep are the best beauty tips. Plus take your makeup off every night.
  26. I hope you will live in a world where women have smashed and stamped on that glass ceiling and they occupy many of the higher offices jobs in the political area, but do also remember nobody ever says wish I spent more time at work.
  27. Always spend money on bags, shoes, coats and jeans.
  28. Kindness, caring, hardworking and generous are essential qualities in a life partner.
  29. Men are like cars , some have a faster engine, some have better bodywork, others are sturdy but they all provide the same function, getting from A to B. Never overlook the bike!
  30. Books are wonderful but they do not compensate for real experience.
  31. The art of being a lady is how not to get caught!
  32. Friends are so important.
  33. You are the best decision I ever made and my legacy to the world. In the short time I have been a mama I have learnt that nothing can be planned, you are the best teacher and it is my role to give you the wings to fly.

What would be the lessons and experiences you would like to pass on? I will edit and add to this list each year.

Ta ta for now.

Fantasy/Dream Dinner Party

by thelifestylelady August 14, 2015

Howdy Y’all,

Happy Friday! So today I thought I would post something fun! My fantasy dinner party. I think I mentioned in an earlier post that Mr L and I love to entertain, although we have done less of it since Little L arrived. It’s certainly a long time since we had a dinner with this many guests 😜. So I set about working out who would be the sixteen people dead or alive I would have to my dream dinner party. Firstly this is meant to be fun. Secondly it is not as easy as it first appears choosing sixteen is no small task. Your guests, however much you try, reflect your personality and your interests. For example as much as  I tried I definitely had more political figures and world leaders than sportsman. I am aware of this. I did want to  have many more women and people from the arts world but I felt I could not overlook people on this list because of their gender or profession. So again I am over explaining, here is MY list, I will probably kick myself later as there will be someone I should have invited but forgot, so it’s an ever evolving work in progress. Enjoy:-

1. Queen Elizabeth II, my first invite and rightly so. In my humble opinion one of the greatest women in history. She is about to celebrate being the longest-serving monarch (the other being Queen Victoria, both women – interesting!) Although not known for her candor, (so no gossip) the changes she has seen, her sense of duty and the outstanding decorum she has displayed are a wonder to behold. What I would give to have her at my table. God Save The Queen.

2. Sir Winston Churchill. Undoubtedly one of the Greatest Brits that has walked the earth. I have no doubt the country I grew up in, if not the world, would be a very different place if not for this man. The questions I would ask. No table would be complete without him.

3. Thomas Cromwell, this is a no brainer for me, especially if you have read Wolf Hall and Bringing Up The Bodies. Mr Cromwell was pivotal through a fundamental time in my country’s history. Many believe he was the closest confident for a period to Henry VIII and saw through the detachment of England to the Catholic Church, the creation of The Church of England and several beheadings and burning of major figures including Anne Boleyn. Not one to get the notoriety, but perhaps the brains behind the operation. Very scholarly and I have many a questions.

4. Nelson Mandela, a very divisive invite, but could not have my fantasy party without him. During his lifetime he saw so much change in South Africa much stimulated by him. He went from an apartheid system to being President, which is entirely remarkable when you think about it. The 18 years he spent  at Robben Island, much in isolation, fascinates me, how that affects a person and brings about change. So many questions for him.

5. Mother Teresa, I am trying to stay away from religious figures but this woman to me is a world great. A servant of God who dedicated her life to helping HIV/AIDS victims in the poorest parts of the world. She is a Nobel Peace prize winner as well as many other world-renowned prizes. Religious or not (I am not Catholic) this lady deserves her invite. She dedicated her life to humanitarian causes and making the world better.

6. Angelina Jolie, another divisive invite, but a lady I admire, sadly not for her movies but for her work with the UN. She has served the UN for over ten years as a Goodwill Ambassador. The work she has done for refugees is remarkable. I don’t think since Diana Princess of Wales has one person been able to highlight humanitarian issues in the same way. She genuinely impresses me. I also think she is an ambassador for young people in how to turn your life around. It also helps she is breathtakingly beautiful and I want her to be my BFF so she is on the invite list. Plus Mummy L would like her to bring her husband.

7. Thomas Jefferson, one of the founding fathers. If you have not had the good fortune to visit his beautiful home Monticello in Virginia USA it is a must. This great man was a thinker, an intellect and an inventor. His home reflects this. I think he would be fascinated by the scientific developments of the day and how his greatest works The Declaration of Independence still holds today (and I could give him a hard time about it!) Deserves his invite and Mr L would be thrilled.

8. James Corden, Love James. If you don’t know who he is you should. He is the new presenter of The Late Late Show in the US, and a comedy staple for the Brits. He is super fun, super cute, super talented and super smart. Every dinner party needs a comedian and it would be my honor to have James. Watch his show, he won’t be on the night of my party though.

9. Alan Turing, if you didn’t see the Benedict Cumberbatch movie The Imitation Game then you should. The movie was about Alan Turing. Undoubtedly the creator of the computer, one of the greatest creations in history. It was his machine that broke the Enigma code which ultimately led to the breakthrough and winning of WW2. Alan Turing’s life is not as well-known as it should be. I am appalled by the way my country treated him for being a homosexual. He has since received a royal pardon (after his death.) I have many questions for the great man. I am quite sure he would love to see how far his invention has come. Absolutely want him at my dinner party.

10. Andrea Bocelli. Voice of an angel. Humble, talented, romantic and could not imagine a better guest to get up and serenade us after dinner. Love all his work and could not think he would offend the sensibilities of any of the guests.

11. Emily Bronte, just the lady who wrote the greatest book of all time, Wuthering Heights. It amazes me how an unmarried woman, restricted by restraints of convention could write such a passionate book. The passion is not as today, explicit, but more subtle and raw. The questions I have for the vicars daughter are boundless and she is a definite at any dinner party of mine.

12, Lady Margaret Thatcher, enough said. The first female leader of the Western World. Great friend of Ronald Reagan. Interesting and undoubtedly influenced me as a person as she was Prime Minister when I was born. She was a leader of her times and whether you agree with her politics, she did a great deal for women and their position in the world, simply by being a leader. She would be such an interesting guests, makes the invite list.

13. Anna Wintour. Editor in Chief of  US Vogue. Now she is another controversial choice, because many suggest she is not a ray of sunshine, surely that is how she has held her top position in the cut throat world of fashion for so long. Fabulous taste in sunglasses and everything beauty and fashion, I would be fascinated in her stories and her opinions on the world. Friendly or not this lady is highly impressive to me and I bet she brings fabulous hostess gifts. Anna your invite is in the mail.

14. Sir Ranulph Fiennes. One of the greatest living explorers. He has done it all, climbed Everest, been to the North and South Pole and is the first explorer to walk Antarctica on foot. So highly impressive chap. Great stories, amazing experience. Could not think of a better guest.

15.  Brian Keenan. This for some may be a peculiar choice, some may even wonder who this man is. More famous would be Terry Waite or John McCarthy. I remember it was probably ten years ago that I read his book and it had a profound effect upon me, as I hope it would anyone. I recommend his harrowing tale to all who can. It shocks me how mankind can treat each other. Four and half years in captivity the majority chained and blindfolded. I have many questions for him and I would think his perspectives and view on world affairs and humankind would be profound and he makes my party list no hesitations.

16. Roger Federer, what is not to say about the consummate professional athlete. He is the only sports person to make the party. He is arguable the greatest tennis player of all time if not sports person. To me he is the epitome of class and upholds and displays every characteristic that a superstar athlete should. There is very little else to say. He is an absolute party must and imagine great company.

So that is it. My list, hope we can all find a date that works, especially with my busy diary :0) Who would you invite? Who do you disagree with? Anyone you think yes that is my list too? Mr L promises me he will produce a list, one I hope he will share on here one day!!!! This is also a great date night or dinner party question. It is really good for getting a conversation started and causing some interesting dialogue. I hope it is not too UK focused. Let me know what you think? This is not meant to offend anyone either. If you do not agree with my choices or commentary that is ok too.

Happy Weekend.

Ta ta for now,

TLL xx

Sending you love and joy for this holiday season. Merry Merry Christmas & may 2023 be full of good health, abundant blessings and brighter times. 🤶 🎄
Good Morning, please don’t let her words and the other female warriors who came before her be in vain. Don’t just remember her and others by watching the documentaries and passing platitudes, respect them in action. Women died, starved and were tortured so we could have a seat at the table. Some women are still fighting for the right! Let’s honor them today whichever side you fall. Vote!! #vote #vote2020 #suffragette #womensuffrage #election2020
#itsnationaldaughterday Best thing I have ever done, teaches me everyday. Is the world ready for this smart, kind, funny force of nature? She is ready to make her mark and I am her biggest supporter. #love #familylife #daughters #thelifestylelady
Gertie says “where is my drink? I rang the 🛎 ages ago” I think it’s a dogs life. She is taking advantage of the cooler weather after a weekend of storms and before the rain hits again this afternoon. #thelifestylelady #gertiethegoldendoodle #dogslife #takealoadoff #relax #relaxing
Today on the blog I get personal and share the dilemma which too many of us are facing and which is keeping me up at night, what to do when there is no clear direction? As mothers we are meant to have the answers, our children look to us for strength and guidance, what to do when we don’t? Please pop over to www.thelifestylelady.com and have a read and let me know what your planning to do. I know that we are all in this together. This sums it up. Keep going friends. 2020 has challenged every single one of us in ways we could never comprehend, for some we can’t see any light at the end of the tunnel. Events are demonstrating the best and worst of mankind, if like me your having to make tough decisions about school and what to do, you are not alone. I feel stuck between a brick and a hard place. What I intend to do is what I know, get up, keep going and throw on a bright lip! Keep smiling friends x #thelifestylelady #2020sucks #school
Yesterday we celebrated 10 years of marriage, no mean feat by today’s statistics. It was not the celebration or in the place where we had planned, but if Covid has taught me anything it’s that we are not in charge and can not control everything . It is not the bells and whistles that make the most sacred of memories. I am not one for big declarations of affection (sorry y’all,) I share simply this, I got lucky, I married a man I looked up too and respect. He doesn’t need to tell you what a good egg he is because he demonstrates it in his everyday unassuming way. He is a gentleman in all ways. Our decade has not been all plain sailing, we have moved more than some people vote, we have laughed more than we have cried and there has been reason for both. We had our beautiful daughter and although the path was not as easy or as we imagined we are a family. Life rarely goes the way you plan, case in point currently, but it’s a hell of a lot easier with a partner who is always you greatest ambassador and champion. Love like life is a journey and I am glad to do it with you. Happy Anniversary Mr L! #thelifestylelady #marriage #love #anniversary
With a summer where travel is looking impossible, you feel a little homesick, but Granny to the rescue is sending pics of her beloved garden. One of my favorite things about summer in Britain is the beautiful gardens and my mummy’s is no exception. She has always been green fingered, she will say she is not, but here are some highlights and everything has yet to bloom. Can you sympathize with my yearning for home? #grannysgarden #greenfingers #gardenofengland #gardening #home #thelifestylelady
